Automate inactive customer management and protect your store!
Easily manage your inactive Shopify customers! Anonymizing data after 3 years of inactivity is essential — discover how to automate this process to save time, secure your data, and stay compliant.
Automating the anonymization of inactive Shopify customers
When a customer hasn't placed an order in 3 years, can you still retain their data?
If you sell in Europe or to European customers, this question is critical, both to maintain buyer trust and avoid penalties.
The GDPR follows the principle of data minimization: personal data should only be retained for as long as strictly necessary.
For inactive customers, the French Data Protection Authority (CNIL) recommends a 3-year retention period after the last interaction (purchase, login, contact, etc.).
How to comply with GDPR on Shopify
The most efficient way to enforce the 36-month rule on Shopify:
In your Shopify admin, go to Customers and click "Add filter"
Select "Last order date", choose the operator "Before", and enter the date from 36 months ago
To include customers who never ordered, add a second filter: "Last order date IS NULL" AND "Customer added date < 36 months"
Shopify will display all profiles with no orders in the last 3 years (or who never purchased). Select them and click "Bulk delete".
While effective, this method has drawbacks:
Manual repetition required: You must repeat the process monthly to stay compliant
Permanent deletion: All historical data is lost, including valuable analytics
No third-party sync: Tools like Klaviyo or Gorgias retain data unless manually updated
Limited traceability: No timestamped proof for compliance audits or disputes
